LCD
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TVs are made up of hundreds of thousands of pixels in-between two polarizing filters, with CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) providing the backlight. When light hits the pixels, the variations of the sub-pixels within them provide color and create the picture.
LED
LED (Light Emitting Diode) and OLED (Organic LED) TVs are similar to LCD TVs, with the basic difference being the LED backlight used instead of the CCFLs. When the diodes are turned on, energy is released to provide the light.
Size
Because of the technology involved, LED TVs can be thinner and lighter than LCD flat screen TVs, taking up less space and making them suitable for wall mounting.
Power
LED TVs also power up faster than LCD TVs, and use up to 40 percent less electricity to operate, which makes them more energy efficient and generally enables them to last for a longer period of time.
Picture
LED TVs also offer a sharper and brighter picture, greater contrast and color, and a wider viewing angle than LCD screens.
Price
Because of the newer, better technology, LED TVs remain higher-priced than LCD HDTVs, which can come in smaller screen sizes and remain the most affordable type of HDTV today.
