Surface Mount LEDs is the full name of SMD, they are are smaller than leaded components, 3 LEDs of different colors could be placed together within one tiny case which making them ideal for space-limited board sizes or equipments . The result of this was a much smaller pixel pitch (distance between the LEDs) therefore resulting in higher resolution and image quality. They are also highly resistant to shock and vibration and are available in packages with a considerably higher number of pins than leaded LEDs.

Therefore, with SMD technologies, LED SMD boards are more efficient and lower power consumption than RGB boards in indoor applications.
